Realize, I Am Working
Realize, I Am Working By Byron Pulsifer
A lot of us have dreamed about working at home. The advantages are many including avoiding the daily commutes to traditional work environments, the hassle of less than encouraging bosses, the constantly changing office politics, and the all too often taking work home.
If you have taken the plunge to setting up your own at home business it is interesting to note the reactions of friends and other relatives. To many of our family, it seems that their view of working at home is that we have the life of leisure with little demands on our time, nor deadlines to meet. While the advantage of working at home in setting your own working hours is a plus, it is often misunderstood that variable start times for the beginning of the work day doesn't mean that you don't have to make up that time some where during the course of a day.
It occurs far too often that we get calls from others who expect us to drop everything during the course of a day to get in our car and go and help them with some task. It's a strange thing that we are expected to drop everything because we work at home while it would be a cardinal sin for us to call them at their work and demand the same thing. So, why is this?
The major mistake we have made with some of our friends and family is that, on occasion, we have dropped our work in order to help them with some problem or another. For us, when we have interrupted our work schedule to help others, and believe me, you have to set a work schedule, we invariably have to return home to continue our work no matter what the time. Given the nature of our work at home business, we often have to work weekends as well. And, isn't it strange that although we've told people that we are working on a given weekend, they seem intent on dropping in uninvited and expect us to entertain them.
We have been able to resolve some of this problem of uninvited guests by getting them to help us with our work. In other words, if you drop in uninvited, we don't stop work, and we get your free labor to help with some of the more menial tasks. For the most part, the advent of working for us for free has eliminated a lot of uninvited guests.
Don't make the mistake we've made.
If you work at home, make sure you stick to your guns during your own work schedule. Reduce noon business calls by telling those who call you that you will call them after you finish work. Discourage uninvited guests by making it known that you can't stop work and talk or have a coffee. While it may be difficult for you to be blunt, sometimes this is the only recourse to use on those who just don't get it - you are working even though you may be at home.
